Let's talk about value. Not "good for a hotel bar" value or "reasonable for the neighborhood" value — actual cheap drinks in places you'd want to be. Phoenix has plenty of spots that'll drain your wallet fast, but it also has some genuinely generous happy hour deals if you know where to look.

The $3-$5 Range

HULA'S Modern Tiki Uptown

The best per-drink deal in Phoenix might be HULA'S (5114 N 7th St, Uptown). Happy hour runs Monday through Friday with $3 select bottled beers — that's it, three dollars. They also do $2 off drafts and $2 off wine by the glass. The tiki environment is genuinely fun, the cocktails are good, and $3 is $3. You're not going to find lower in any spot worth drinking at.

Lookout Tavern (North Phoenix)

Lookout Tavern (830 E Greenway Pkwy, North Phoenix) runs a serious weekday happy hour: $4 domestic pints (Bud Light, Coors Light, Michelob Ultra, Miller Lite), $5 Surfside Lemonade Vodkas, $6 well liquor, $5 chips & salsa. If you're in North Phoenix and want cheap beers, this is your spot.

The Theodore Beer + Wine Bar

The Theodore (Roosevelt Row) runs happy hour from 11am to 7:30pm, Monday through Friday — $0.50 off 5oz draft pours, $1 off 10oz pours. The window is exceptional; it basically covers your whole workday. Not the biggest discount, but for a bottle shop and wine bar, the base prices are already reasonable.

The $5 Range

The Little Woody (Arcadia)

Every day of the week: $5 well drinks, $5 Tito's Vodka, $5 draft beers, $6 select appetizers. The Little Woody (4228 E Indian School Rd) doesn't get fancy about it. If you want cheap drinks in Arcadia without having to think too hard, this is the move.

The Vig (Downtown Phoenix)

Monday through Friday at The Vig (606 N 4th Ave): $5 all draft beer, $5 well liquor, $7 house wine, $6 BBQ Pork Sliders. Consistent, reliable, central location.

Fate Brewing Company (Uptown)

$5 16oz craft beers Monday through Friday, 3-6pm. Fate (Uptown) makes legitimately good beer — Local Lager, Hatch Chile Gatos, Irish Red Ale — and $5 for a full pint of any of them is a deal. Plus $6 chardonnay and food specials.

The Porch (Arcadia)

Weekday happy hour 4-6pm: $5 margaritas, $5 Cranberry Mules, $9 chips and dip. Five dollars for a marg in Arcadia is competitive.

BARCOA Agaveria (Downtown Phoenix)

Monday through Friday, 4-7pm: $7 margaritas, $7 mezcalritas. Not $5, but for an agave bar with a real mezcal program, $7 is as close to cheap as this category gets in Phoenix.

All-Day Windows: Where Time Is the Deal

The Whining Pig Downtown

Happy hour runs 1pm-8pm, seven days a week: up to $3 off beer and wine by the glass, plus $8 grilled cheese sandwiches. That seven-hour window is the deal — you can come at 2pm on a Tuesday or 7pm on a Sunday and get the discount either way.

Postino Central (Midtown)

$6 glasses of wine and $6 beer pitchers from 10am to 5pm, daily. The seven-day window and the 10am start time make Postino (Midtown) one of the most flexible value plays in the city. It's not cheap-cheap, but $6 wine all day, every day, at a spot this good is hard to argue with.

GenuWine Arizona (Downtown)

$5 draft beer, $8 5oz glasses of wine, 11am-6pm Monday through Friday. Early and generous. Good for a long lunch or an afternoon session.

The Monday Special: Arizona Wilderness DTPHX

Monday only, 11am-10pm: half-price cocktails at Arizona Wilderness (Roosevelt Row). AZ Wilderness doesn't make cheap cocktails — they make good cocktails that happen to be half price on Mondays. This is one of the best value propositions in Phoenix if you can swing a Monday.

The Math

For a weeknight drinking budget:

  • $20 or less: HULA'S (two $3 beers + a tiki cocktail and still have change), Lookout Tavern (four $4 pints + snacks), The Vig (four $5 drafts)
  • $30 or less: Ghost Donkey (three $7 margaritas and guac), OHSO Arcadia (two cocktails + cheese curds + deviled eggs), The Little Woody (six drinks, basically)
  • Best Monday in Phoenix: Arizona Wilderness happy hour cocktails + a late dinner elsewhere

The trick in Phoenix is knowing that many of the best deals are Monday through Friday only, and the windows close at 6pm or earlier. Show up late and you're paying full price. Show up at 4pm with a plan and you're eating and drinking well for the cost of one cocktail at a Saturday night Scottsdale bar.
